I study the history of colonial British America and the Atlantic World at the University of Virginia. I wrote a history of the emergence of a plantation landscape called Plantation Enterprise in Colonial South Carolina (Harvard, 2006) and am currently writing a study of cartography and colonization titled The New Map of Empire: How Britain Imagined America before Independence (Harvard, forthcoming 2014). I'm developing MapScholar, an online web tool for displaying historic map collections which has received NEH and ACLS support.
